Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) is China’s largest pure-play foundry, headquartered in Shanghai and partially state-owned by government funds and industry partners . Founded in 2000, SMIC operates major 8‑inch and 12‑inch fabs in Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, and Shenzhen. It provides wafer foundry services across process nodes from mature 350 nm down to 7 nm (and limited 5 nm), serving global customers like Huawei, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments.
SMIC has significantly expanded capacity recently, adding tens of thousands of 12‑inch wafer starts annually and aiming to capture a large share of China’s outsourced semiconductor demand. Despite tight export controls, SMIC has produced 7 nm chips using multi‑pattern DUV lithography, with ongoing efforts towards 5 nm and advanced FinFET nodes.
Beyond semiconductors, SMIC has branched into renewable energy, through its affiliate PGPC, expanding geothermal capacity (~600 MW) in Southeast Asia
